Simmaron's research group is small in comparison to many research groups but their studies tend to be very informative. The group is now taking on Rapamysin as a very hopeful treatment for ME/CFS. Simmaron's " main interest for ME/CFS is that it inactivates autophagy – the process through which cells cleanse themselves of old and damaged compounds which would otherwise interfere with mitochondrial production and cellular functioning."![]()
"When autophagy breaks down, it can impair oxygen consumption and mitochondrial activity, affect immune functioning, turn cells into pro-inflammatory generators, and lead to clumps of proteins that can damage all sorts of cellular processes." Since all of these areas are affected in ME/CFS Rapamysin appears to be a very promising treatment option.![]()
The Open Medicine Foundation (OMF) is studying the effects of Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) and Mestinon (Pyrodostigmine) as a treatment for ME/CFS. This study is also "designed to alert doctors, many of whom probably know little or nothing about ME/CFS, about new treatments for ME/CFS patients who are probably currently getting little or no help."![]()
